How to Half Double Crochet

The Half Double Crochet (HDC) is a versatile stitch that sits right between Single Crochet and Double Crochet.

It has more height than a Single Crochet but is more compact than a Double Crochet, making it perfect for

projects that need warmth, texture, and a bit of drape.

If you are working through the Basic Crochet Stitches series in order, this stitch will feel like a natural next step.

What Makes the Half Double Crochet Different?

The Half Double Crochet is unique because it pulls through three loops at once at the end of the stitch.

This creates a slightly thicker and more cushioned fabric than Double Crochet, while still working up faster

than Single Crochet.

How to Make a Half Double Crochet

1. Yarn over.

2. Insert your hook into the next stitch.

3. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will have three loops on your hook.

4. Yarn over.

5. Pull through all three loops.

That completes one Half Double Crochet stitch.

Turning Chain for Half Double Crochet

When starting a new row:

- Chain 2.

- The turning chain does not count as a stitch.

- Work the first Half Double Crochet into the very first stitch of the row.

Using a stitch marker in the first stitch can be very helpful while learning.

Common Tips for Beginners

- Keep your yarn overs relaxed so pulling through all three loops is smooth.

- Make sure you are not skipping the first stitch of the row.

- Avoid crocheting too tightly, as HDC can naturally tighten the fabric.

Up Next in the Series

Next, we will move on to Double Crochet, where height and drape become more noticeable.
